Light fixture flickering
New LED lights
Customer in WIlder, VT complained of a recessed can light in kitchen turning on and off, seemingly at random.
Recessed cans are a popular style for residential environments. Back in the days of incandescent light bulbs, putting that type of heat source into an enclosed space was a major fire risk, so many recessed can fixtures were equipped with heat sensors which would switch off the lights if they detected a fire danger. However, given the age of some of these fixtures, and their general incompatibility with new, efficient LED bulbs, it’s not unusual for these to malfunction.
Faulty, old recessed can light
This was an easy diagnosis, but a tricky swap - reaching up into the ceiling cavity without damaging the ceiling required some careful manoeuvring. But with a few awkward angles, we were able to replace the fixture with a modern, and much more attractive and efficient LED fixture. For consistency of appearance, and to avoid future issues, we swapped out the other two fixtures in the hallway outside the kitchen. Another job well done!
Much better!
Oven won’t open
Oven latch rusted
Customer in Norwich, VT complained that oven wouldn’t open, throwing error code. Tenant had attempted to use the ‘self-clean’ feature of their oven. Typically we wouldn’t recommend this feature because the high temperatures can mean fire danger, and sometimes can even damage the components of the oven. It’s a sad truth that appliances just aren’t made the way they used to be.
We discovered that the latch that locks the oven closed during the self-clean cycle was badly rusted, and froze in place. The oven couldn’t move the latch with the small motor attached to the latch by a push rod, and threw the error code. We removed the latch mechanism, cleaned off the rust, lubricated it, and
